Biography

Teo Fabi was born in Milan on 9 March 1955. He won the European karting title in 1975 and the European Formula Ford 1600 championship in 1977. In 1978 he finished fourth in European Formula Three, and in 1980 he took third place in European Formula Two with three wins.

He made his Formula One debut with Toleman in 1982, but started only seven of the 14 races he was entered for. In 1983 he raced in the American CART series. He returned to Formula One in 1984 with Brabham, alongside reigning World Champion Nelson Piquet, and ended the year twelfth in the championship. In 1985 he was back with Toleman and took Toleman's only pole position at the German Grand Prix, held at the new Nürburgring, though he scored no points that year. In 1986 he drove for the team, now running as Benetton, and started from pole at both the Austrian and Italian Grands Prix. His best result that season was fifth in Spain, and he finished fifteenth in the championship. He stayed with Benetton in 1987, was third in Austria and ended the season ninth, his best championship position. He did not race in Formula One again. In total he made 64 starts, with two podiums and three pole positions.

In CART, he took pole position for the 1983 Indianapolis 500 as a rookie and was named the series' rookie of the year. He won four races that season, and the championship went to Al Unser at the season finale in Phoenix. In 1988 he returned to CART with Porsche, for whom he drove until 1990, then raced for Hall in 1993 and 1994 and for Forsythe in 1995. He took his final win in the series at Mid-Ohio in 1989.

In sportscars, he won the 1000km of the Nürburgring in 1982 and the 1000km of Imola in 1983. In 1991 he became World Sportscar champion with Jaguar, and in 1993 he finished second at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Peugeot. His brother Corrado Fabi also raced in Formula One.
