Biography

Oscar Piastri was born in Melbourne on 6 April 2001. He started out in radio-controlled car racing and moved into karting in 2011 at the age of ten, winning several regional titles in Australia. In 2015 he relocated to Europe to continue his career. After a debut in the UAE Formula 4 championship, he finished runner-up in the 2017 British Formula 4 Championship with Arden.

In 2019 Piastri won the Formula Renault Eurocup with R-ace GP. Titles with Prema followed in FIA Formula 3 in 2020 and FIA Formula 2 in 2021. He became the sixth driver to win the GP2 or Formula 2 title in his rookie season, and he is the only driver to have won Formula Renault, Formula 3 and Formula 2 titles, or their equivalents, in successive years. From 2020 he tested for Renault and later Alpine, and in 2022 he was Alpine's reserve driver.

He joined McLaren in 2023 as team-mate to Lando Norris. He made his debut at the Bahrain Grand Prix and took his first podium with third place in Japan. In Qatar he won the sprint and finished second in the race, and he ended the season ninth in the championship. In 2024 he won his first Grand Prix in Hungary and a second in Azerbaijan, becoming the fifth Australian to win a Grand Prix. He finished fourth in the standings and helped McLaren win the constructors' title for the first time since 1998.

In 2025 he took his first pole position in China and won the race. He won seven times that season and led the drivers' standings for a long stretch. In a title fight with Norris and Max Verstappen he finished third, 13 points behind Norris. He remains with McLaren in 2026, and finished second behind Kimi Antonelli at the Japanese Grand Prix.
