History

The Red Bull Ring is a motorsport circuit in Spielberg in Styria, Austria. The lap is 4.326 kilometres long with ten corners and runs clockwise. It was built in 1969 as the Österreichring, replacing the bumpy track on the nearby Zeltweg airfield. The circuit sat in the Styrian mountains, was only about ten metres wide throughout and had marked changes in elevation. The consistently high speeds were especially hard on tyres.

Formula One raced at the Österreichring every year from 1970 to 1987, at first over 5.911 kilometres. From 1977 the lap measured 5.942 kilometres. In the same year the Hella-Licht corner was turned into a chicane. The narrow start-finish straight often caused accidents at the start. In 1985 the race was stopped after one lap, and in 1987 it had to be restarted twice. Niki Lauda won the 1984 race in a McLaren and remains the only Austrian to win his home Grand Prix.

Because of safety concerns, Hermann Tilke rebuilt the circuit on the same site in 1995 and 1996. The lap was cut to 4.326 kilometres, and three tight right-handers were meant to create overtaking chances. As the A1-Ring it hosted Formula One again from 1997 to 2003.

After 2003 Austria dropped off the calendar. The grandstands and pit buildings were demolished in 2004, Red Bull later rebuilt the track, and the Red Bull Ring reopened on 15 May 2011. The Austrian Grand Prix has been back on the calendar since 2014, including 2026. In 2019 the first corner was renamed the Niki Lauda Turn in his honour. In 2020 and 2021 the circuit also staged the Styrian Grand Prix.
