Biography
Pierre Gasly was born in Rouen in 1996 into a family with a long link to motorsport: his father competed in karting, endurance racing and rallying. Gasly began competitive karting in 2006, aged ten, and finished runner-up in the CIK-FIA European Championship in 2010. He moved into single-seaters in 2011, taking third place in the French F4 Championship, and won the Formula Renault Eurocup title with Tech 1 in 2013. A member of the Red Bull Junior Team from 2014, he finished that year as runner-up in Formula Renault 3.5 behind Carlos Sainz Jr., and he won the GP2 title with Prema in 2016. In 2017 he raced in Japan's Super Formula, winning two races and finishing second in the standings, half a point short of the title. He also made a one-off Formula E appearance in New York for Renault e.dams.
Gasly made his Formula One debut at the 2017 Malaysian Grand Prix for Toro Rosso, replacing Daniil Kvyat. In 2018 he was a full-time driver for the team, scored his first points with fourth place in Bahrain and ended the year 15th in the championship.
For 2019 he was promoted to Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen. His best finish there was fourth at the British Grand Prix. Ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix he was moved back to Toro Rosso, with Alexander Albon taking his seat at Red Bull. At the Brazilian Grand Prix he finished second, his first podium, and he ended the season seventh in the standings with 95 points.
In 2020, driving for the renamed AlphaTauri team, Gasly won the Italian Grand Prix. He was the first French driver to win a Grand Prix since Olivier Panis at Monaco in 1996. He took third place in Azerbaijan in 2021. After moving to Alpine for 2023, he finished on the podium at the Dutch Grand Prix. Another podium followed at the rain-affected 2024 São Paulo Grand Prix, and he ended that season tenth in the standings. In 2025 he scored all of Alpine's points. In 2026 he drives for Alpine. At the Italian Grand Prix, where he had won in 2020, he took the first pole position of his career. He was the first French driver on pole since Jean Alesi at the 1997 Italian Grand Prix.
