History

The Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, formerly known as Mosport Park and Mosport International Raceway, is in Clarington, Ontario, about 75 kilometres east of Toronto. The name Mosport is a contraction of Motor Sport. The road course is 3.957 km long, has ten corners and runs clockwise. After Westwood in British Columbia, it was the second purpose-built road racing circuit in Canada. It was designed and built in the late 1950s.

The first race took place in June 1961, a local event. The first major meeting followed on 25 June, the Player's 200 for sports cars, which Stirling Moss won in a Lotus 19. At his suggestion, a planned hairpin was built as two separate corners instead, and Moss Corner is named after him. Unlike many historic venues, the layout has stayed largely unchanged. In 2001 the whole circuit was resurfaced to FIA specifications and is now 13 metres wide, with care taken to keep the character of the old track and almost all of its racing lines.

International sports car races were held at the circuit under the title Canadian Grand Prix, a name normally reserved for Formula 1 races. In 1967, Canada's centennial year, Mosport staged its first World Championship round, won by Jack Brabham. Races followed in 1969, from 1971 to 1974, and in 1976 and 1977, eight World Championship rounds in all. Jackie Stewart won in 1971 and 1972, both times for Tyrrell. Jody Scheckter took the final Formula 1 race at the circuit in 1977 in a Wolf, after which the Canadian Grand Prix moved to Montreal.
