History

Kyalami lies in Midrand, in South Africa's Gauteng province, just north of Johannesburg. The name comes from Zulu: Khaya lami means "my home". Harry Pierce and Dick Bremner laid out the circuit with a few helpers in the mid-1950s, and it opened on 4 November 1961. The original track was fast and sweeping, with corners such as Crowthorne Corner, Barbecue Bend, Jukskei Sweep and Sunset Bend.

The first Formula One World Championship race here took place in 1967, when Pedro Rodríguez won the South African Grand Prix in a Cooper. Kyalami was on the calendar every year until 1980, but there was no championship round in 1981. The Grand Prix returned in 1982, and at that race the drivers' association GPDA held a strike in protest at new FISA superlicence conditions. Alain Prost won the race for Renault. Niki Lauda won here in 1976, 1977 and 1984, more than anyone else at the circuit, while Jackie Stewart, Prost and Nigel Mansell each won twice. After 1985 the track dropped off the calendar.

Kyalami was rebuilt in 1989. Leeukop Bend, the Kink, the old pit lane and start/finish straight, Crowthorne Corner and Barbecue Bend were all removed. Jukskei Sweep was heavily altered, while Sunset Bend, Clubhouse Bend and the Esses stayed in modified form. As a result, the fast circuit became tight and twisty. Formula One returned on this layout in 1992 and 1993. The last World Championship race was held in 1993, won by Prost for Williams.
