Biography

Lucas di Grassi was born in São Paulo on 11 August 1984 and started karting at the age of ten. In 2000 he won the Pan American Kart Championship. He moved into single-seaters in 2002, finishing runner-up in Formula Renault 2.0 Brazil, and was second again in the 2003 Formula 3 Sudamericana. He then relocated to Britain for the 2004 British Formula Three season. In 2005 he finished third in the Formula 3 Euro Series and won the Macau Grand Prix.

From 2006 to 2009 di Grassi raced in the GP2 Series. With ART Grand Prix he was runner-up to Timo Glock in 2007, and he finished third in both 2008 and 2009. Alongside this, he worked for Renault at times as a test and reserve driver.

In 2010 he joined the new Virgin team, with Glock as his team-mate. Di Grassi was entered for 19 races and started 18 of them. He retired from the opening two rounds, in Bahrain and Australia, with hydraulic problems. His best result was 14th in the Malaysian Grand Prix. He did not start the Japanese Grand Prix after crashing on the way to the grid. He scored no points and ended the year 24th in the drivers' standings. Virgin signed Jérôme d'Ambrosio for 2011, and di Grassi spent 2011 and 2012 as a Pirelli test driver, helping to develop tyres.

He made his World Endurance Championship debut for Audi in 2012 and raced for the team there from 2013 to 2016. He finished third at Le Mans in 2013 and 2016, and second in 2014. In 2016 he won two rounds and was runner-up in the championship. From 2014 he also competed in Formula E for Audi Sport ABT and won the first race in the series, in Beijing. He took the title in the 2016-17 season. Later he drove for Venturi in 2021-22, Mahindra in 2022-23 and ABT again from 2023-24. During the 2025-26 season he announced his retirement from Formula E and professional racing.
