Biography

José Froilán González was born on 5 October 1922 in Arrecifes, Argentina. He made his Formula One World Championship debut at the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix, and that year he started two races for Maserati.

In 1951 he drove for Ferrari and Talbot-Lago. At the British Grand Prix he took Ferrari's first victory in a World Championship race, and he finished the season third in the standings. He drove for Maserati again in 1952 and 1953, ending those years ninth and sixth overall. In 1954 he returned to Ferrari, won the British Grand Prix once more and finished as runner-up in the championship. That same year he also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Ferrari, sharing the car with Maurice Trintignant.

After that his Formula One appearances became occasional. He started one race for Ferrari in 1955, two for Maserati and Vanwall in 1956, and one for Ferrari in 1957. His final Grand Prix was the 1960 Argentine Grand Prix, again with Ferrari. In total he made 26 starts, with two wins, 15 podium finishes and three pole positions. In 2011, on the 60th anniversary of Ferrari's first win, Ferrari and the FIA honoured him at the British Grand Prix, where Fernando Alonso drove his Ferrari 375 F1 for four laps at Silverstone. González died in Buenos Aires on 15 June 2013.
