Biography
Adrian Sutil was born in Starnberg on 11 January 1983 and began karting at the age of 14. In 2002 he moved into Swiss Formula Ford 1800 and won all twelve rounds of the season. He finished sixth in Formula BMW ADAC in 2003 and then stepped up to the Formula 3 Euroseries, where he was runner-up to Lewis Hamilton in 2005. In 2006 he raced in Japan, won the All-Japan Formula Three Championship and took third place in the Macau Grand Prix.
That same year he entered Formula One as a test driver for Midland F1, and he appeared as third driver at three Grands Prix. By his third appearance the team had been taken over by Spyker. He became a full-time race driver with Spyker in 2007. In the Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji he moved into the points after a rival was penalised following the race. In 2008 he drove for the team under its new name, Force India. At Monaco he was running fourth with six laps to go when Kimi Räikkönen hit him from behind and he retired.
In 2009 he qualified seventh for the German Grand Prix and second at Monza. At Monza he finished fourth and set the fastest lap, his first and also the first for Force India. It remained his best race result in Formula One. In 2010 he finished fifth in Malaysia and scored points in several more races. In 2011 he was seventh at Monaco and sixth in the season finale in Brazil, and he ended the championship in ninth place, his best final position.
He had no race seat in 2012, when Nico Hülkenberg took his place. In 2013 he returned to Force India, finishing seventh in the opening race in Australia and fifth at Monaco. In 2014 he drove for Sauber and finished 18th in the championship. Before the 2015 Malaysian Grand Prix he became a reserve driver at Williams. Across 128 race starts he took neither a win nor a podium finish.
