Biography

Esteban Gutiérrez was born on 5 August 1991 in Monterrey, Mexico. He began karting in 2004 in the Mexican Rotax Max Challenge. In 2007 he moved into single-seaters with Formula BMW USA, finishing second overall and taking Rookie of the Year honours. In 2008 he won the Formula BMW Europe title with seven victories. He raced for ART Grand Prix in the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2009 and finished ninth. In 2010 he won the inaugural GP3 Series season with the same team, clinching the championship with two races still to run. He then drove in GP2 for Lotus ART in 2011 and for Lotus GP in 2012, finishing third overall in the latter year with three wins. That made him the first GP3 graduate to end up in the top three of GP2.

In September 2010 Gutiérrez was named Sauber's test and reserve driver. In 2013 he was promoted to a race seat alongside Nico Hülkenberg. On his debut in Australia he started 18th and finished 13th, the best-placed rookie. In Spain he set his first fastest lap. In Japan he climbed from 14th on the grid to seventh, holding off Nico Rosberg in the closing stages, and it remained the only points finish of his Formula One career. He ended the 2013 championship 16th. He stayed with Sauber in 2014 and finished 20th. He then lost his seat and spent 2015 as Ferrari's test and reserve driver.

In 2016 Gutiérrez returned to racing with the Haas F1 Team, partnering Romain Grosjean. He finished 11th in Monaco, Austria, Germany and Singapore, and ended the year 21st in the championship. In November 2016 he confirmed that he would be leaving the team. In total he started 59 Grands Prix without a podium finish. In 2017 he contested three Formula E races for Techeetah and scored five points. Also in 2017 he joined Dale Coyne Racing in the IndyCar Series and took part in seven events, with 13th at Iowa his best result. From 2018 he worked as a simulator driver for Mercedes.
