Biography
Anton "Toni" Ulmen was born in Düsseldorf on 25 January 1906. He began racing in 1925 on a 250 cc Velocette. In 1927 he won the first race held at the Nürburgring on a 350 cc Velocette, and in 1929 he took the 350 cc class at the Eilenriede circuit near Hanover. By 1930 he was a works rider for NSU.
After the Second World War he moved into car racing, first with a BMW 328 and later with a Veritas. Between 1949 and 1952 he won four German championship titles in sports car and Formula 2 racing. His only Formula 1 World Championship season was 1952, driving for Veritas. He made his debut at the Swiss Grand Prix on 18 May and retired with a fuel tank problem. At the German Grand Prix he finished eighth. Those were his two World Championship races.
After 1952 he competed in car races only occasionally. In 1953 he shared a Jaguar D-Type with Herman Roosdorp to third place in the 24 Hours of Spa. He later became president of the Deutscher Motorsport Verband and was awarded the Silbernes Lorbeerblatt by German President Theodor Heuss. Ulmen died on 4 November 1976.
