Biography

Romain Grosjean was born in Geneva on 17 April 1986 and holds French and Swiss nationality. He moved from karting into junior single-seaters in 2003 and won all ten rounds of the Formula Lista Junior championship. In 2005 he took the French Formula Renault title with ten victories, and in 2007 he won the Formula 3 Euro Series. He finished fourth in the 2008 GP2 Series and was part of Renault's young driver programme.

He came into the Renault seat vacated by Nelson Piquet Jr. from the 2009 European Grand Prix and started seven races. With no Formula One drive for 2010, he won the Auto GP title, took victories in the FIA GT1 World Championship and made his Le Mans 24 Hours debut. In 2011 he won the GP2 Series.

Grosjean returned to Formula One in 2012 with Lotus, alongside Kimi Räikkönen. He finished third in Bahrain, the first podium for a French driver since Jean Alesi in 1998, and added podiums in Canada and Hungary. At the start of the Belgian Grand Prix he caused a multi-car collision and was banned from the next race, in Italy, the first such ban for a driver since 1994. In 2013 he reached the podium six times and ended the championship in seventh place, his best final position. His tenth and last podium came at the 2015 Belgian Grand Prix.

From 2016 he drove for Haas. In the team's first race, the Australian Grand Prix, he finished sixth and scored its first points. He took fourth place in Austria in 2018. His final Grand Prix was the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, where a heavy crash on the first lap set his car on fire. He climbed out unaided, and the halo was credited with saving his life. He missed the last two races of that season. In total he made 179 starts, with no wins and no pole positions.

In 2021 he moved to the IndyCar Series with Dale Coyne and took his first pole position and first podium in that series at the Grand Prix of Indianapolis. He raced for Andretti in 2022 and 2023, finishing second at Long Beach among other results, and for Juncos Hollinger in 2024. He was a reserve driver for Prema in 2025 and rejoined Dale Coyne Racing for 2026.
