History

The Bahrain International Circuit is in Sakhir, Bahrain, and opened in 2004. It was built in the middle of the desert and designed by Hermann Tilke, who also drew up the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. The complex has six separate tracks, including a test oval and a drag strip. To stop sand blowing onto the track, the organisers sprayed an adhesive on the sand around it. The track surface is made of graywacke aggregate from a quarry in Shropshire, England. The same material is used at the Yas Marina Circuit, home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The grand prix layout is 5.412 km long, has 15 corners and runs clockwise. In 2014 the first corner was named after Michael Schumacher, the seven-time world champion.

The first world championship race at the circuit was held on 4 April 2004 and was the first Formula One Grand Prix in the Middle East. Michael Schumacher won for Ferrari. From 2004 to 2010 the Bahrain Grand Prix was on the calendar every year. In 2010 Formula One used the 6.299 km Endurance Circuit to mark its jubilee. The 2011 race was cancelled because of the situation in the country, and Formula One returned to Sakhir in 2012. In 2014, the tenth year of Formula One at the circuit, the first race under floodlights took place, and later editions were also run at night.

In 2020, after the calendar was reworked because of the COVID-19 pandemic, two Grands Prix were held: the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Sakhir Grand Prix on the 3.543 km Outer Circuit. In 2025 Oscar Piastri won the Bahrain Grand Prix for McLaren. The 2026 Grand Prix was cancelled.
