Biography
Martin Donnelly was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on 26 March 1964. He raced in Formula Three and International Formula 3000. He won the Macau Grand Prix in 1987 and finished third in the 1988 International Formula 3000 standings despite contesting only the last five rounds. That year he also worked as a test driver for the Lotus Formula One team.
His first Formula One race came at the 1989 French Grand Prix, where he stood in for Derek Warwick at Arrows. He qualified 14th, while his team-mate Eddie Cheever lined up 25th. Donnelly finished the race in 12th place, three laps down. In 1990 he raced for Lotus, no longer as a test driver but as a race driver, alongside Warwick. The Lamborghini V12-powered car yielded no points that year, and engine failures often ended his races. He made 14 starts in total.
During practice for the 1990 Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez, Donnelly had a serious accident caused by a suspension failure. It brought his Formula One career to an end. In 1993 he had a short test with Jordan, but he never returned to Formula One.
After Formula One, he competed in rallycross in 1992, in the Vauxhall Nova Challenge, and won a race in the Formula Classic series in 1995. He owned a Formula Vauxhall and Formula Three team, became a driving coach and stayed closely linked with Lotus. In 2007 he won his class and a race in the Elise Trophy round at Donington Park. He later served as the drivers' representative among the FIA stewards at several Formula One races, including the Canadian Grands Prix of 2012 and 2013. In 2015 he made his British Touring Car Championship debut, but he drove only briefly before Max Coates replaced him. His career inspired the backstory of the character Sonny Hayes in the 2025 film F1.
