Biography
Guanyu Zhou was born in Shanghai in 1999 and started karting aged eight. In 2012 he moved to Sheffield to compete internationally. He was a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy from 2014 to 2018, and then of the Renault and later Alpine academy until 2021. In 2015 he finished runner-up in the Italian Formula 4 Championship with Prema and was the best rookie. Three seasons in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship followed, ending with eighth place and two wins in 2018. From 2019 to 2021 he raced in Formula 2 for Virtuosi: seventh as best rookie, then sixth with his first win in Sochi, and finally third with four wins. In the winter of 2021 he also won the F3 Asian Championship.
In 2022 he became the first Chinese driver to race in Formula One. At Alfa Romeo he finished tenth on his debut in Bahrain and scored a point. In Canada he reached the final qualifying session for the first time and finished eighth. At the British Grand Prix his car overturned in a first-lap collision, and he was declared fit after being observed. He set his first fastest lap in Japan and ended the season eighteenth in the drivers' standings.
He stayed with Alfa Romeo for 2023, scoring with ninth places in Australia, Spain and Qatar, and again finished eighteenth. In Hungary he qualified fifth. In 2024 he drove for Kick Sauber and finished his home race in Shanghai in fourteenth place. He scored the team's only points of that season with eighth in Qatar, and ended the year twentieth in the standings. In total he started 68 races and scored 16 championship points, without a podium or a win.
He was a reserve driver for Ferrari in 2025. For 2026 it was announced that he would not continue in that role and would join Cadillac as a reserve driver instead.
