Biography

Daniil Kvyat was born in Ufa on 26 April 1994 and grew up in Moscow. He began racing karts competitively at the age of ten and moved to Italy in 2007 to pursue a professional career. After spells in Formula BMW, the Toyota Racing Series and Formula Renault, he won the Formula Renault 2.0 Alps title in 2012 and finished runner-up to Stoffel Vandoorne in the Eurocup. In 2013 he took the GP3 Series title with Arden in his first season in the category.

Kvyat made his Formula 1 debut with Toro Rosso in 2014. He finished ninth in the Australian Grand Prix, his first race, and, at 19, became the youngest points-scorer in the sport's history up to that point. He ended the year fifteenth in the championship. In 2015 he was promoted to Red Bull to take the seat vacated by Sebastian Vettel. He finished second at the Hungarian Grand Prix for his first podium, and completed the season seventh overall with 95 points, three clear of team-mate Daniel Ricciardo.

In 2016 he took third place in China. After a collision with Vettel at the start of the Russian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen replaced him from the Spanish Grand Prix onwards and Kvyat went back to Toro Rosso. He stayed there for 2017. He was replaced by Pierre Gasly for the Malaysian Grand Prix and returned for the race in the United States, after which he was released from the Red Bull driver programme. In 2018 he worked for Ferrari, mainly in the simulator.

He came back to Toro Rosso in 2019 and finished third at the rain-affected German Grand Prix. It was his third podium and the team's first since its win at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix. He ended the season thirteenth in the standings. In 2020 he drove for AlphaTauri, finished fourth at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and took fourteenth in the championship. Yuki Tsunoda took his seat for 2021. In total he started 110 races without a win and recorded three podiums.

After Formula 1, Kvyat was Alpine's reserve driver in 2021. His planned 2022 World Endurance Championship campaign with G-Drive fell through when the team withdrew. In 2023 he joined Prema in the LMP2 class and took third place on his WEC debut at Sebring. In 2024 he drove for Lamborghini in the Hypercar class, and in 2025 he contested four IMSA endurance races, with fourth at Petit Le Mans his best result. In 2026 he made his Super GT debut in the GT300 class with JLOC.
