Biography
Umberto Maglioli was born in Bioglio, Italy, on 5 June 1928. Giovanni Bracco introduced him to racing, and Maglioli went along with him to several editions of the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio. His best Mille Miglia result was second place in 1951, in a Lancia Aurelia B20 GT.
In the Formula One World Championship, Maglioli took part in ten races between 1953 and 1957. He drove for Ferrari from 1953 to 1955, for Maserati in 1956 and for Porsche in 1957. He finished on the podium twice but never won a race. His best championship position was 18th, in 1954. At the 1957 German Grand Prix, Porsche entered two 550 RS cars, as Formula Two machinery was eligible at the time. Maglioli drove one and Edgar Barth the other. Maglioli did not finish.
In sports car racing he won several races. In 1953 he won the Targa Florio for the first time, driving a Lancia D20 on his own, and took the Pescara 12 Hours in a Ferrari 375 MM alongside Mike Hawthorn. In 1954 he won the last Carrera Panamericana in a Ferrari 375 Plus. He also won the 1000 km of Buenos Aires with Giuseppe Farina and the 1000 km Supercortemaggiore at Monza with Hawthorn. In 1956 he won the Targa Florio for Porsche, again driving alone. In 1964 he won the Sebring 12 Hours for Ferrari, and in 1968 he took a third Targa Florio victory with Vic Elford in a works Porsche 907. Maglioli retired from racing in 1970. He died in Monza on 7 February 1999.
