Biography
Rudolf "Rudi" Fischer was born in Stuttgart in 1912 and raced with Swiss nationality. He led Écurie Espadon, a team of Swiss amateur drivers, and he raced under its name for most of his career. The team began with mainly French cars, usually Gordinis, and later moved to Ferraris and other Italian machinery. As a result, the French word Écurie gave way to its Italian equivalent, Scuderia Espadon.
Fischer made his Formula One debut at the 1951 Swiss Grand Prix. He drove for Ferrari in 1951 and 1952, started seven World Championship races and took two podium finishes. At the 1952 Swiss Grand Prix in Bern he finished second behind Piero Taruffi, who was also in a Ferrari. He ended the 1952 season fourth in the World Championship. He also took part in non-championship races, and finished third in a Ferrari at the race marking the reopening of the AVUS. Fischer died in 1976.
