Biography
Peter Arundell was born on 8 November 1933 in Ilford, Essex. After serving in the Royal Air Force he became a racing driver, competing in Elva and Lotus cars. In 1959 he won the John Davy Trophy at Brands Hatch in an Elva-DKW. In Formula Junior he took the British championship in 1962 in a Lotus 22 and again in 1963 in a Lotus 27, and he also won the Formula Junior race at Monaco in 1961 and 1962.
Arundell was entered once by Lotus in 1963 but did not start. In 1964 he contested four World Championship races for the team and finished on the podium at both the Monaco Grand Prix and the Dutch Grand Prix, ending the season eighth in the championship.
While racing in Formula Two at Reims in 1964, he was involved in a collision with Richie Ginther and missed most of the 1965 season as a result. Colin Chapman kept his place in the Lotus team open, and on his return on 1 January 1966 Arundell finished third in the non-championship South African Grand Prix at East London. He started seven races in the 1966 World Championship and finished 17th overall. At the end of that year he left Formula One with 11 starts in total. He retired from racing altogether in 1969 and died on 16 June 2009.
