Biography
The Swiss driver Ottorino Volonterio was born in Orselina in 1917. He trained as a lawyer before taking up sports car racing. He made his Formula One debut at the 1954 Spanish Grand Prix at Pedralbes, sharing a Maserati 250F with his compatriot Emmanuel de Graffenried. The pair retired with engine failure. Two more World Championship races followed. At the 1956 German Grand Prix on the Nürburgring Nordschleife he was unclassified, six laps behind winner Juan Manuel Fangio. At the 1957 Italian Grand Prix at Monza he shared a car with André Simon and finished 11th, 15 laps behind the winner Stirling Moss.
Away from the championship, he carried on competing in non-championship Formula One races and in sports cars. His best result was second place in the Coupe de Paris at Montlhéry in 1955. He also entered Grand Prix cars for other drivers. He kept racing until 1973 and died in Lugano in 2003.
