Nyck de Vries was born on 6 February 1995 in Uitwellingerga in the Netherlands. He began competitive karting at the age of nine and won the Karting World Championship in 2010 and 2011. He moved into Formula Renault in 2012 and took the Eurocup title in 2014 with Koiranen. He then finished third in Formula Renault 3.5 with DAMS in 2015, and sixth in the 2016 GP3 Series with ART Grand Prix, winning two races. As early as 2010 he was taken into the McLaren Young Driver Programme.
In Formula 2 he started 2017 with Rapax before switching to Racing Engineering, and finished seventh. He drove for Prema in 2018, then returned to ART in 2019 and won the title with four victories. He also joined Mercedes in Formula E for the 2019-20 season, and in 2020-21 he became world champion with two wins and four podiums.
In Formula One, de Vries took part in his first test for Mercedes in December 2020 and was one of the team's reserve drivers from 2021. He made his race debut at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix, stepping in for the unavailable Alexander Albon at Williams. He qualified thirteenth, started eighth after penalties for other drivers and finished ninth, scoring points on his first start. In 2023 he drove for AlphaTauri, replacing Pierre Gasly, but he scored no points and was replaced by Daniel Ricciardo after ten races. In total he made eleven starts and finished 21st in the 2022 standings and 22nd in 2023.
He then returned to Formula E with Mahindra. In the World Endurance Championship he raced in the LMP2 class with Racing Team Nederland and, with his team-mates, won the 6 Hours of Fuji. He later drove Toyota's Hypercar, winning the 6 Hours of Imola and finishing second overall at Le Mans. In 2024 he made his Super Formula debut with Team Impul, contesting the rounds at Motegi and Fuji Speedway, and in 2025 he took on a test and simulator role at McLaren.
