Biography
Nicholas Latifi was born in Montreal on 29 June 1995 and grew up in Toronto. He began karting in 2009 and moved into single-seaters in 2012, finishing seventh in the Italian Formula Three Championship with BVM. In 2013 he took fifth place in the British Formula 3 International Series with Carlin, and in 2015 he was 11th in Formula Renault 3.5 with Arden. From 2016 he raced for DAMS in GP2 and its successor, Formula 2. In 2017 he took his first Formula 2 win at Silverstone and finished fifth overall. In 2019 he took four wins and ended the year as runner-up to Nyck de Vries. Alongside this, he worked as a test driver for Renault in 2016 and 2017, and as a reserve driver for Force India in 2018 and Williams in 2019.
Latifi stepped up to a full race seat with Williams in 2020, partnering George Russell. He finished 11th on his debut at the Austrian Grand Prix. The team scored no points that year, and he ended the championship 21st. His first points came at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix. After qualifying 18th, he ran as high as third following the crashes at the first corner and the restart, and was classified seventh once Sebastian Vettel was disqualified. He scored again in Belgium and finished the season 17th with seven points, his best championship position. At the Abu Dhabi finale, his crash on lap 53 brought out a safety car. After it ended, Max Verstappen passed Lewis Hamilton on the final lap and won the world championship.
In 2022 his team-mate was Alex Albon. At Silverstone he reached the final part of qualifying for the first time and qualified tenth. He finished ninth in Japan, which brought his first points of the season, and ended the year 20th with two points. Williams then replaced him with Logan Sargeant. Latifi made 61 Grand Prix starts without a podium finish.
