Biography
Jean-Éric Vergne was born on 25 April 1990 in Pontoise, France. He started karting at the age of four on his father's track near Paris and became French champion in the children's category in 2001. He moved into single-seaters in 2007, winning the French Formula Renault Campus series and joining the Red Bull Junior Team. In 2009 he finished second to Albert Costa in both the Eurocup and the West European Cup in Formula Renault 2.0. He won the British Formula 3 title with Carlin in 2010, and in 2011 he was runner-up in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series behind his team-mate Robert Wickens.
Vergne made his Formula One debut with Toro Rosso in 2012 and stayed with the team until 2014. He scored his first world championship points with eighth place in the second race, in Malaysia. He ended that season 17th in the standings and finished 15th in 2013, when he took sixth place in Canada after qualifying seventh. In 2014 Daniil Kvyat was his team-mate. Vergne finished 13th in the championship and again took sixth place, in Singapore. He made 58 starts in total and never reached the podium. Carlos Sainz Jr. replaced him at Toro Rosso for 2015. From 2015 Vergne was a test and development driver for Ferrari, mainly on the simulator, and he left the team in February 2017.
In Formula E he raced for Andretti from 2014-15, then for DS Virgin Racing, and from 2016-17 for Techeetah. With Techeetah he won the championship in 2017-18 and 2018-19, becoming the series' first driver to defend the title. He later drove for DS Penske and moved to Citroën for the 2025-26 season. For the 2022 World Endurance Championship he signed with Peugeot for the Hypercar class. Previously he had competed in LMP2 with CEFC Manor TRS Racing and G-Drive Racing.
