Biography
Heinz Schiller was born in Frauenfeld on 25 January 1930. In Switzerland he first became a speedboat champion, then moved into sports car racing and found success in the mid-1950s. He then turned to single-seaters, competing first in hillclimbs and later in circuit racing.
In 1962 he drove a Porsche for Ecurie Nationale Suisse in Formula One races outside the world championship, finishing eighth on aggregate in Brussels and ninth at Pau. His only World Championship start came in the German Grand Prix on 5 August 1962, in a Lotus 24, and he retired with oil pressure problems. He contested one more Formula One race in 1963, finishing third at Pau, five laps down. He then went back to sports cars and finished tenth in the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans, sharing the car with Gerhard Koch. Schiller died in 2007.
