Biography
Egbert "Eppie" Wietzes was born in Assen in the Netherlands in 1938 and emigrated to Canada with his family at the age of twelve. He was a Canadian racing driver. He made his Formula One debut on 27 August 1967 in the first Canadian Grand Prix, held at Mosport, driving a Lotus. He retired on lap 69 with an electrical problem and was also disqualified for receiving outside assistance. His second and final World Championship race was the Canadian Grand Prix again in 1974, in a rented Brabham BT42. That race also ended early, with a transmission problem. He never scored a point.
At the 1973 Canadian Grand Prix he drove the first safety car used in Formula One, a Porsche 914, which went out on track after a collision involving François Cevert and Jody Scheckter. He later found success in Formula 5000 and won the 1981 Trans-Am Series. In 1993 he was inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame.
