Biography
Bob Sweikert was born in Los Angeles in 1926 and grew up in California. He began racing for prize money in 1947 in a track roadster, moved on to midget cars in 1948 and later also drove sprint cars. The Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Drivers' World Championship from 1950 to 1960, and it was the only world championship race Sweikert contested. He started it five times between 1952 and 1956, in cars built by Kurtis Kraft or Kuzma.
In 1955 he won the race from 14th on the grid and finished seventh in the world championship. That same season he also took the AAA national championship for big cars and the Midwest sprint car championship. He is the only driver to have achieved all three in one season. In 1956 he started 10th at Indianapolis and finished sixth. Sweikert died on 17 June 1956 in a sprint car race at Salem Speedway.
