Biography

Alan Rees was born on 12 January 1938 in Langstone, Wales. In 1962 he drove for the works Lotus Formula Junior team and won three races, before a crash in the Nürburgring 1000 km sports car race brought his season to an end. From 1963 to 1968 he raced in Formula Two for Roy Winklemann Racing, where he regularly beat drivers such as Jackie Stewart and Jochen Rindt.

In the Formula One World Championship he took part in three races: one in 1966 for Brabham and two in 1967 for Brabham and Cooper. Two of those appearances were made in Formula Two cars. He scored no points. His best result was seventh place in the 1967 German Grand Prix, which was second in the separate Formula Two classification.

He also worked in team management. In 1969 he co-founded March Engineering with Max Mosley, Graham Coaker and Robin Herd, and his initials make up the "AR" in the name. At the end of 1971 he moved to Shadow, where he became team principal. In 1977 he left Shadow to help found Arrows.
