The Yas Marina Circuit stands on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The island is a headland that a canal cuts off from the mainland. Hermann Tilke designed the circuit, which is now 5.281 km long, has 16 corners and is driven anti-clockwise. It runs past the marina and beneath the W Abu Dhabi hotel, and part of the pit lane exit passes through a tunnel under the track. Five grandstand areas line the circuit.
The venue was fitted with a permanent floodlighting system supplied by Musco Lighting. The surface is made of graywacke aggregate from a quarry at Bayston Hill in Shropshire, England. It gives a high level of grip but wears tyres faster. The same material is used at the Bahrain International Circuit. To open the circuit, a two-day GP2 Asia Series test was held a week before the 2009 Grand Prix. On 7 October 2009 the FIA gave final approval for Formula One racing, and Bruno Senna was the first driver to complete a test run.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been held here as the Formula One season finale since 2009, and Sebastian Vettel won the first race for Red Bull. Until 2020 the lap was 5.554 km long. Ahead of the 2021 race, the old sequence of turns 4 to 6 was replaced by a single, less severe hairpin, and another section was rebuilt as a sweeping banked curve.
