By the numbers
A crash means a race retirement from an accident, collision or spin. Starts exclude non-qualifications, non-starts and exclusions.History
Fair Park is in Dallas, in the United States, close to the city centre. For the 1984 Dallas Grand Prix, a temporary street circuit was laid out there. It measured 3.901 kilometres, had 23 corners and ran anti-clockwise. The event was meant to show that Dallas was a world-class city.
The Formula One race took place on 8 July 1984. There were organisational problems even before the start, and conditions were made harder by heat of around 38 degrees Celsius and damage to the road surface. Of the 26 cars that started, only eight reached the finish. Nigel Mansell collapsed from exhaustion while trying to push his broken car across the line. Keke Rosberg won the race for Williams.
Formula One never returned to Fair Park. The race planned for 1985 was cancelled, partly because of safety concerns and complaints from people living nearby, as the track ran close to residential streets. The Dallas Grand Prix therefore remained the only World Championship round held at Fair Park. A Trans-Am Series race was run there in 1988, and from 1989 the event moved to other locations in the Dallas area.
