Zsolt Baumgartner was born in Debrecen, Hungary, on 1 January 1981. He began karting at 13 and moved into single-seaters in 1997 with German Formula Ford. He went on to compete in German Formula 3, Formula Renault and Formula 3000. In 2002 he became Jordan's test and reserve driver.
He made his Formula One debut at the 2003 Hungarian Grand Prix, standing in for the injured Ralph Firman at Jordan, and also started the Italian Grand Prix that year. In 2004 he contested the full season with Minardi. After a ninth place in Monaco and a tenth in Canada, he finished eighth in the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis, which gave Minardi its first point in more than two years. He finished the 2004 world championship in 20th place and made 20 starts in total. He is the only Hungarian to have scored a world championship point in Formula One.
In 2007 he was test and reserve driver for Minardi Team USA in Champ Car, without taking part in a race. In 2008 he became the test driver for the Tottenham Hotspur team in Superleague Formula.
