Biography

Walter Charles Brown, known as Walt, was born in Springfield in the United States on 30 December 1910. He was an American racing driver who specialised in Indy car racing. His career in the big cars began in 1941, and in 1948 he won a race at Langhorne Speedway.

From 1950 to 1960 the Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship. Brown started the race in both 1950 and 1951, driving a Kurtis Kraft each time, which gave him two World Championship starts. His best finish was 19th place, and he scored no championship points.

Brown died on 29 July 1951 in an accident at Williams Grove Speedway. Two other drivers also lost their lives that day in consecutive qualifying runs at Funk's Speedway in Winchester, Indiana, and the date became known as "Black Sunday".
