Volker
Weidler
Biography
Volker Weidler was born in Heidelberg in 1962. In 1985 he won the German Formula Three championship. In 1989 he was entered by Rial for ten Formula One Grands Prix, but he failed to qualify every time and so never made a World Championship start.
He then moved to Japan, where he raced in Japanese Formula 3000 and the All Japan Sports Prototype Championship. In 1991 he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans together with Johnny Herbert and Bertrand Gachot in the Wankel-powered Mazda 787B. It was the first victory in the race for a Japanese manufacturer and a Japanese engine supplier. During the 1992 season he ended his time in Japanese Formula 3000, even though he was leading the championship at that point.
