Biography
Tony Shelly was born in Wellington in 1937. His racing career began in 1955 with an entry in the sports car class of the New Zealand Grand Prix, although he did not take part in the race itself. In 1958 he won a race at Teretonga in a Cooper.
He moved to Europe in 1962 and drove mainly for John Dalton, usually in non-championship events. There he finished fifth in the Lombank Trophy and third in the Lavant Cup. In the Formula One World Championship he was entered in three races with Lotus but started only at Aintree, where a failed cylinder head gasket ended his race. He failed to qualify at the Nürburgring and at Monza. At the end of the season he returned to New Zealand, kept racing in 1963 and 1964, and then retired, though he still competed occasionally afterwards. Shelly died in 1998.
