Biography
Tony Maggs was born in Pretoria on 9 February 1937. In 1961 he drove for Ken Tyrrell's Formula Junior team with Cooper-BMC cars and shared the European Championship with Jo Siffert. The same year he made his Formula One debut at the British Grand Prix in a Lotus, becoming the first South African to take part in a Grand Prix in the series.
He drove for Cooper in 1962 and 1963, contesting 9 and 10 races and finishing seventh and eighth in the World Championship. In both seasons he came second in the French Grand Prix, and he took three podiums in total. After 1963 he no longer drove for Cooper. In 1964 he raced a BRM P57 for Scuderia Centro Sud, finishing in the points twice in three starts and ending the year twelfth in the championship. He also competed in Formula Two with an MRP Lola and won the Kyalami 9 Hours with David Piper in Piper's Ferrari GTO.
In 1965 he started only the South African Grand Prix at East London, again in a Lotus. In a national race at Pietermaritzburg he crashed his Brabham, and a spectator standing in a restricted area was killed. Maggs retired from racing immediately afterwards. His Formula One record stands at 25 starts and three podiums, with no pole positions and no wins.
