Biography
Tommy Byrne was born in Dundalk, Ireland, on 6 May 1958. After strong results in Irish Formula Ford, he won the 1982 British Formula 3 Championship, even though Formula One commitments meant he missed some rounds. That season he was entered five times by Theodore but qualified for only two races. He retired from both and did not score a point. In October 1982 he tested a McLaren MP4/1 and set a quicker time than the works drivers Watson and Lauda.
After a short return to Formula 3 with Eddie Jordan, he moved to the United States. From 1986 he raced in the American Racing Series, winning ten of his 55 starts and finishing runner-up in the championship in 1988 and 1989. He ended his career in the series in 1992. His book Crashed and Byrned appeared in 2008, and the documentary Crash and Burn followed in 2016.
