Biography
Timothy Andrew "Timmy" Mayer was born on 22 February 1938 in Dalton, Pennsylvania, in the United States. His older brother Teddy was one of the founders of the McLaren team. In the early 1960s both brothers travelled from the United States to Europe together with Peter Revson, who later won a Grand Prix.
Mayer made his only start in the Formula One World Championship on 7 October 1962, driving a Cooper. He retired with an ignition failure and scored no championship points. In 1964 he took part in the Tasman Series for the new McLaren team, driving purpose-built Cooper T70 cars alongside Bruce McLaren. During practice for the final race of the series at Longford in Tasmania, Mayer was killed in a crash. He died on 28 February 1964.
