Stephen
South
Biography
Stephen South was born in Harrow in 1952. A former English kart champion, he raced in Formula Ford in 1973 and 1974, then moved up to Formula 3 in 1975. In 1977 he won the BRDC British Formula 3 Championship. In Formula 2 he drove for Ron Dennis's Project Four team, won the Rhein-Pokalrennen at Hockenheim and finished sixth in the final standings.
His only Formula One entry came at the 1980 United States Grand Prix West in Long Beach, where he stood in at McLaren for the injured Alain Prost. South failed to qualify, so he never started a Formula One race. His lap times were almost four seconds slower than those of his team-mate John Watson. Later that year he competed in Can-Am for Newman Racing. A serious crash in practice at Trois-Rivières brought his racing career to an end.
