Biography
Travis Leon Webb, known as Spider, was born in Joplin, Missouri, in 1910. His family moved to Los Angeles in 1923, and in 1928 he began racing on Muroc Dry Lake. A car owner gave him his nickname. He later turned to the dirt ovals of Southern California. In 1936 he was offered a drive in a Big Car in the Central States Racing Association and moved to Indianapolis. In 1948 he won the AAA Midwest sprint car championship.
From 1950 to 1960 the Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula One World Drivers' Championship. Webb took part in four world championship races in that way: in 1950 with a Maserati, in 1952 and 1954 with a Bromme, and in 1953 with a Kurtis Kraft. He scored no points. All of his world championship races were therefore run at Indianapolis. Webb died in McMinnville, Oregon, in 1990, and was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1997.
