Biography
Shorty Templeman, born Clark Thomas Templeman, came into the world on 12 August 1919 in Pueblo, Colorado. In midget racing he won five state championships in Washington and three in Oregon. He took the USAC National Midget Series title in 1956, 1957 and 1958, the first three editions of the series. In 1984 he was inducted into both the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame.
From 1950 to 1960 the Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula 1 World Championship. Templeman started it in 1955 in a Trevis and in 1958 and 1960 in a Kurtis Kraft, but scored no championship points. In the AAA and USAC Championship Car series he made 42 starts between 1954 and 1962. His best result was second place in 1961 at DuQuoin and Syracuse, and his best Indianapolis finish was fourth, also in 1961. He died in Marion, Ohio, in 1962 as a result of a crash in a midget car.
