Biography

Sean Gelael was born in Jakarta on 1 November 1996. In 2005 he was navigator to his father Ricardo, a former rally driver, on the Rally of Indonesia. In 2007, aged ten, he set a MURI record as the youngest racing navigator. In karting he finished third overall in the 2011 Asian Karting Open, Formula 125 Senior class. In 2012 he took fourth in the overall standings of Formula Pilota China and contested the final round of Formula Abarth at Monza. He raced in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship in 2013 with Double R Racing and in 2014 with Carlin, finishing 18th with 25 points in the second year. In 2015 he moved on to Formula Renault 3.5, ending the year 19th for Carlin.

That year he also made his GP2 debut at the Hungaroring. In 2016 he raced a full season for Campos Racing and finished second at the Red Bull Ring, behind his team-mate Mitch Evans. In Formula 2 he drove for Arden in 2017, Prema in 2018 and 2019, and DAMS in 2020. In 2018 he finished second in the Monaco feature race and ended the season 15th with 29 points. After 2020 he left Formula 2. He never started a Formula 1 race. From 2017 to 2019 he drove for Toro Rosso in testing, and in 2017 he also took part in Friday practice sessions in Singapore, Malaysia, the United States and Mexico.

He also raced in endurance events. In the 2015/16 Asian Le Mans Series season he won both of his races with Antonio Giovinazzi. In 2016 he made his World Endurance Championship debut. In 2021 he finished second in the LMP2 class at Le Mans with Jota, and the team took second place in the LMP2 championship behind WRT. With WRT he won at Spa, Fuji and Bahrain in 2022, but lost the title to Jota by 21 points. In 2024 he won in the new LMGT3 class at Imola and was second in class at Le Mans.
