Robin
Frijns
Biography
Robin Frijns was born in Maastricht on 7 August 1991 and began in karting, racing in Belgium and France. In 2008 he finished third in the KF2 European Championship and runner-up in the French Championship. He moved up to Formula BMW Europe in 2009 with Josef Kaufmann Racing, finishing third overall and as the best rookie. In 2011 he won the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup at his first attempt, 45 points clear of Carlos Sainz Jr. In 2012 he took the Formula Renault 3.5 Series title with Fortec Motorsports, with three wins and four poles.
Frijns never started a Grand Prix in Formula One. In October 2012 Sauber announced that he would drive its car at the Young Drivers Test in Abu Dhabi, and he was also added to Red Bull Racing's line-up for that test. He became Sauber's test and reserve driver in 2013 and Caterham's reserve driver in 2014. In 2013 he also raced in GP2 for Hilmer, winning a race and finishing second in another on only his second weekend, at Barcelona.
As an Audi factory driver, he won the Blancpain GT Series in 2015 on his debut in sportscar racing, driving an Audi R8 for Audi Club Team WRT. He added the Sprint Cup title in 2017, the Bathurst 12 Hour in 2018 and the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2022. In the DTM, from 2018 to 2020, he finished fifth in 2019 and third in 2020, when he won three races.
Frijns raced in Formula E from 2015 to 2025, with one season out in between. With Andretti he reached the podium in Putrajaya in 2015-16 and finished twelfth in the standings. In 2018-19 he won twice, in Paris and New York, for Envision Virgin Racing and ended the season fourth. He drove for ABT Cupra in 2022-23, then returned to Envision and left the team after the 2024-25 season.
In the World Endurance Championship, Frijns won the LMP2 title with Team WRT in 2021, along with the 24 Hours of Le Mans by just over seven tenths of a second. The team finished second in 2022 and fourth in 2023. After Audi froze its LMDh project, he joined BMW M Team WRT.
