Biography
Robert Manzon was born in Marseille on 12 April 1917. He worked as a mechanic before taking up racing after the Second World War, starting out in a Cisitalia D46. In 1948 he joined the Gordini team and won a number of minor races, although his cars were not always reliable.
Manzon competed in the Formula One World Championship from 1950 to 1956 and started 28 races. He made his debut at the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix and scored points at that year's French Grand Prix. In 1952 he finished third at the Belgian Grand Prix and ended the championship in sixth place, his best final position. He took his second podium at the 1954 French Grand Prix, driving a Ferrari 625. In 1955 and 1956 he raced for Gordini but had little success in championship events. Away from the championship, he won the 1956 Naples Grand Prix and a sports car race at Pescara.
Manzon died on 19 January 2015 at the age of 97. He was the last surviving driver from the opening Formula One season of 1950.
