Biography

Rio Haryanto was born in Surakarta, Indonesia, in 1993. He started out in karting, won several continental championships and moved into junior single-seaters in 2008. In 2009 he took the Formula BMW Pacific title with the Meritus team. In 2010 he joined Manor for the GP3 Series, won a race at Istanbul Park and finished fifth overall. Two wins followed in 2011, at the Nürburgring and the Hungaroring, both in the rain, and he ended the year seventh in the standings.

He raced in GP2 from 2012 to 2015 with Carlin, Addax, Caterham and Campos. In 2015 he won two sprint races for Campos, in Bahrain and at the Red Bull Ring, and finished fourth in the championship on 138 points. After a test with Marussia in 2012 he became the first Indonesian to qualify for a super licence.

Haryanto drove for Manor in the 2016 Formula One season, alongside Pascal Wehrlein. He made his debut at the Australian Grand Prix, where he retired with a technical failure. He took part in twelve races, scored no points and finished 24th in the world championship. His best result was 15th at Monaco. In August 2016 he was demoted to reserve driver and Esteban Ocon took his seat.

Haryanto then raced in sports cars. In 2018 he finished fifth in the 6-hour race in Shanghai in an Audi R8 LMS GT4, sharing the car with two fellow Indonesians. In 2019 he drove a Ferrari 488 GT3 for T2 Motorsports in the GT World Challenge Asia and finished ninth in the drivers' standings of the 2019-20 Asian Le Mans Series.
