Biography

Riccardo Paletti was born in Milan on 15 June 1958. In 1978 he raced in Formula Super Ford and finished third overall. He made his debut in Italian Formula 3 later that year, and in 1979 he first competed in a few Formula 2 races. In 1981 he finished tenth in the European Formula 2 Championship.

In 1982 he stepped up to Formula One with Osella, alongside Jean-Pierre Jarier. Of his eight entries, only two resulted in a start; in the others he failed to qualify or never reached the grid. At Imola, where only 14 cars took part, he left the pits late and retired after seven laps with a suspension failure. At the Canadian Grand Prix on 13 June 1982 he ran into the stationary Ferrari of Didier Pironi at the start and died as a result of the crash. The circuit at Varano de' Melegari is named the Autodromo Riccardo Paletti in his memory.
