Biography
Peter de Klerk was born in Pilgrim's Rest, South Africa, in 1935. In 1962 he built his own single-seater for the South African Formula One Championship. It was powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine from the Alfa Romeo Giulietta and became known as the Alfa Special.
He made his World Championship debut in it on 28 December 1963 at the South African Grand Prix, where he retired. At the 1965 South African Grand Prix he finished 10th. In 1969 and 1970 he also started one race each year for Brabham. In total he contested four World Championship Grands Prix without scoring a point. The Alfa Special also entered five non-championship Grands Prix and took a podium finish at the 1963 Rand Grand Prix. De Klerk died in 2015.
