Biography
Peter Ashdown was born in Danbury on 16 October 1934. He trained as a vehicle mechanic and spent a few years in the Royal Air Force before he took up racing. He began in a Dellow and around 1955 moved on to a Lotus Mark IX as a privateer. Before his Formula One start he raced in British Formula Junior, but a crash at Rouen-Les-Essarts in 1958 set his career back considerably.
His only Formula One World Championship start came at the 1959 British Grand Prix at Aintree, in a Formula Two Cooper-Climax entered by Alan Brown. He finished 12th, six laps down, which made him third among the Formula Two cars in the race. He then raced a Lola in Formula Junior as well as small-engined sports cars. He won his class at the Nürburgring 1000km in 1960 and 1962, the latter with Bruce Johnstone in the first win for the Lotus 23 in the 1-litre sports car class. He retired from racing that same year.
