Perry
McCarthy
Biography
Perry McCarthy was born on 3 March 1961 in Stepney, East London. Unlike most Formula One drivers, he did not start out in karting. He made his way up through Formula Ford, Formula 3 and Formula 3000, and also raced touring cars and sports cars in the USA, including for Spice Engineering. In 1991 he tested for the Footwork team.
In 1992 he joined Andrea Moda. He was entered seven times but never qualified for a race. His debut in Spain ended in pre-qualifying, with an engine failure after just 18 metres down the pit lane. The team was thrown out of the championship close to the end of the season. During the 1990s McCarthy also tested for Williams and Benetton, but he never started a Formula One race. He moved into sports car racing and contested the 24 Hours of Le Mans five times between 1996 and 2003. He also played The Stig in the first two series of the BBC programme Top Gear.
