Biography
Paul Russo was born on 10 April 1914 in Kenosha in the United States. He began racing midget cars in 1934 and won the AAA Eastern Midget championship in 1938. He later competed in the AAA and USAC Championship Car series, winning twice in 81 starts, at Springfield in 1950 and at Detroit in 1951.
The Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula One World Drivers' Championship from 1950 to 1960, so Russo is counted as an Indy 500 driver in the championship. He made eight championship starts, all at Indianapolis, in 1950 and then from 1953 to 1959. He finished on the podium once.
His brother Joe and his nephew Eddie also raced in Championship Car. Russo was inducted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1992. He died on 13 February 1976 off the coast of Clearwater, Florida, where he was staying for the Daytona 500.
