Biography
Patrick Gaillard was born in Paris in 1952. He raced in French Formula Renault and Formula 3 before moving up to Formula 2 in 1979, the same year as his Formula 1 season with Ensign. He was entered in five races but started only two, failing to qualify on three occasions. Ensign then replaced him with Marc Surer. He did not score any points in the World Championship.
In 1980 Gaillard returned to Ensign for the Spanish Grand Prix and finished sixth, the last of the six cars still running at the end and five laps behind. Because of the dispute between the governing body FISA and the teams' association FOCA, the race was later stripped of championship status, so the result did not count even though it would have earned points. He went on to race in Formula 2, CanAm and sports cars, including the Le Mans 24 Hours, before retiring. He later worked as a racing instructor.
