Biography
Pat O'Connor was born in North Vernon in the United States in 1928 and raced in American Champ Car competition, where he took part in 36 races. He won at Darlington Raceway in 1956 and at Trenton Speedway in 1957.
The Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula One World Championship from 1950 to 1960. O'Connor started it five times between 1954 and 1958, each time in a Kurtis Kraft. In 1957 he took pole position for the Indianapolis 500 and finished eighth. He scored no World Championship points.
He was killed on the first lap of the 1958 Indianapolis 500, in a multi-car pile-up. Afterwards the race officials announced that the starting procedure would be changed. For the 1959 Indianapolis 500, roll bars behind the driver's head were made mandatory, and helmets had to pass a safety certification. He was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1995, and Salem Speedway honoured him, together with Joe James, with an annual title race.
